Also known as: L-Alpha-Glycerylphosphorylcholine, Choline Alfoscerate
Alpha-GPC is the most bioavailable choline supplement, efficiently crossing the blood-brain barrier to support acetylcholine synthesis. It is used for cognitive enhancement and as an adjunct in dementia treatment.
Alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine (Alpha-GPC) is a natural choline compound found in the brain and in small amounts in certain foods. As a phospholipid precursor, it delivers choline across the blood-brain barrier more efficiently than other choline sources such as choline bitartrate. Once in the brain, choline is used to synthesize acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter most closely associated with memory, learning, and attention. Clinical studies in patients with Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia have demonstrated meaningful improvements in cognitive test scores. Alpha-GPC also stimulates growth hormone release and may enhance power output during exercise. In Europe, it is available as a prescription drug (Gliatilin, Delecit) for cognitive disorders, while in the United States it is marketed as a dietary supplement.
Alpha-GPC raises brain acetylcholine levels, improving memory encoding and retrieval. Clinical trials in dementia patients show significant improvements in ADAS-Cog scores.
Alpha-GPC supplementation at 600 mg has been shown to increase growth hormone secretion and improve isometric force production in trained athletes.
A large multi-center trial showed Alpha-GPC administration within 10 days of ischemic stroke improved neurological recovery at 90 days compared to placebo.
