Also known as: Panax quinquefolius, Wisconsin Ginseng
American ginseng is a calming adaptogen native to North America with strong evidence for blood sugar regulation and immune support. Unlike its Asian counterpart, it is considered more cooling and relaxing in traditional use.
American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) is a slow-growing perennial native to the deciduous forests of eastern North America. While it shares the Panax genus with Asian ginseng, its ginsenoside profile differs significantly — it is enriched in Rb1 group ginsenosides and relatively lower in the stimulating Rg1 ginsenosides, giving it a more calming profile. The most studied American ginseng product is Cervalin (COLD-fX), a proprietary poly-furanosyl-pyranosyl-saccharide extract that has demonstrated robust immune-stimulating properties. Multiple RCTs show it reduces the incidence and severity of upper respiratory tract infections. American ginseng also has well-documented hypoglycaemic effects, with acute dosing studies showing significant post-prandial blood glucose reductions in both diabetic and healthy individuals. The plant is endangered in the wild due to overharvesting, and most supplements are now sourced from cultivated plants, primarily grown in Wisconsin and Ontario.
The COLD-fX extract of American ginseng has been shown in multiple RCTs to reduce the frequency and severity of colds and flu in elderly and stress-exposed populations by stimulating innate immune response.
Acute dosing studies demonstrate that 3 g of American ginseng taken 40 minutes before a glucose load significantly reduces post-prandial blood glucose in both type 2 diabetics and healthy subjects.
Daily, beginning at the start of cold and flu season
Most clinical evidence uses the COLD-fX proprietary extract. General root extracts may have different potency.
40 minutes before meals
Monitor blood glucose closely if taking diabetes medications concurrently. Timing relative to meals is important for glycaemic effect.
Immune support with strongest clinical evidence
