Also known as: Brahmi, Water Hyssop, Bacopa
Bacopa monnieri (Brahmi) is an Ayurvedic herb with a long history of use for cognitive enhancement. Clinical evidence supports its ability to improve memory, attention, and information processing speed, particularly with sustained use.
Bacopa monnieri is a creeping perennial herb native to wetlands of South and Southeast Asia, used for over 3,000 years in Ayurvedic medicine as a 'medhya rasayana' (intellect rejuvenator). The primary bioactive compounds are bacosides A and B — triterpenoid saponins that enhance synaptic communication by modulating acetylcholine, serotonin, and dopamine activity. Bacopa also promotes dendritic branching in hippocampal neurons, increases cerebral blood flow, and possesses antioxidant properties that protect neural tissue from oxidative damage. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses of RCTs consistently show improvements in attention, cognitive processing speed, and working memory, with effects becoming more robust after 8–12 weeks of supplementation. Bacopa is particularly well-studied in older adults for age-related cognitive decline. The most common standardised extract (KeenMind / CDRI 08) contains 55 % bacosides. Side effects are generally limited to mild gastrointestinal discomfort, which is reduced when taken with food.
A meta-analysis of 9 RCTs found that bacopa supplementation significantly improved attention, cognitive processing speed, and working memory, particularly in tasks requiring free recall and sustained attention.
Clinical trials in older adults show that 12 weeks of bacopa supplementation improves memory acquisition and retention. Neuroprotective mechanisms include antioxidant activity, reduced beta-amyloid aggregation, and enhanced cholinergic function.
Several trials report anxiolytic effects of bacopa, with reductions in anxiety scores and cortisol levels, suggesting adaptogenic activity that complements its nootropic benefits.

Benefits typically emerge after 8–12 weeks of consistent use. 300 mg of a 55 % bacoside extract is the most common clinical trial dose.
