Also known as: Black Cumin, Kalonji, Nigella
Black seed (Nigella sativa) is a medicinal plant used for over 2,000 years in traditional medicine. Its primary active compound, thymoquinone, exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties with a growing body of clinical evidence.
Nigella sativa, commonly known as black seed or black cumin, is a flowering plant from the Ranunculaceae family native to southwestern Asia and the Mediterranean. Its seeds and cold-pressed oil have been used in Islamic, Ayurvedic, and Unani medicine systems for centuries. The principal bioactive compound is thymoquinone (TQ), a benzoquinone that constitutes 30–48% of the volatile oil. Thymoquinone acts as a potent antioxidant through direct free radical scavenging and upregulation of endogenous antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase). It modulates inflammatory pathways by inhibiting NF-κB, COX-2, and pro-inflammatory cytokines. Clinical trials have demonstrated benefits in metabolic syndrome, showing reductions in fasting glucose, HbA1c, total cholesterol, and triglycerides. Emerging evidence supports immunomodulatory effects, with studies showing enhanced natural killer cell activity and T-helper cell balance.
A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials shows that Nigella sativa supplementation significantly reduces fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, and improves lipid profiles in patients with type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome.
Thymoquinone enhances natural killer cell activity, balances Th1/Th2 immune responses, and supports overall immune surveillance without overstimulation.
Thymoquinone inhibits multiple inflammatory mediators including NF-κB, COX-2, and pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and TNF-α, reducing systemic inflammation.
Once or twice daily with meals
Cold-pressed oil provides higher thymoquinone concentrations. Start with lower doses and increase gradually.
Divided into morning and evening doses
Consistent daily use over 8–12 weeks is recommended for immune benefits.
Highest thymoquinone concentration
Whole-food approach with additional fiber
