Cat's Claw (Uncaria tomentosa) is a woody vine native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. Named for its curved, claw-like thorns, it has been used for centuries by indigenous Amazonian peoples for immune support and inflammation. The bark and root contain bioactive compounds including pentacyclic and tetracyclic oxindole alkaloids, quinovic acid glycosides, proanthocyanidins, and sterols. The pentacyclic alkaloids (particularly isopteropodine and mitraphylline) are considered the primary immunomodulatory constituents, enhancing phagocytosis and stimulating cytokine production. Cat's Claw has demonstrated NF-kB inhibition in laboratory studies, which underlies its anti-inflammatory effects. Clinical research, while limited, has shown promising results for osteoarthritis pain reduction and immune enhancement. It is important to select supplements containing only Uncaria tomentosa, as the related species Uncaria guianensis has a different alkaloid profile.
Oxindole alkaloids in Cat's Claw have been shown to enhance white blood cell activity and increase phagocytosis, potentially improving the body's ability to fight infections.
A randomized trial in patients with knee osteoarthritis found that Cat's Claw extract significantly reduced pain during activity compared to placebo, consistent with its NF-kB inhibitory effects.
