Also known as: Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid, 4-Aminobutyric Acid
GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. Supplementation is used to promote relaxation, reduce stress-related anxiety, and improve sleep quality.
Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a non-proteinogenic amino acid that functions as the brain's chief inhibitory neurotransmitter, counterbalancing excitatory glutamate signaling. When GABA binds to its receptors, it reduces neuronal excitability, promoting a calm mental state. Although the extent to which supplemental GABA crosses the blood-brain barrier remains debated, several controlled trials have shown benefits for stress reduction, sleep latency, and relaxation as measured by EEG alpha-wave changes. GABA is also produced in fermented foods via microbial decarboxylation of glutamic acid. Pharma-GABA, a naturally fermented form produced by Lactobacillus hilgardii, has been the focus of most clinical research and appears to exert calming effects even at modest doses.
GABA supplementation has been shown to increase alpha-wave activity on EEG within 60 minutes, indicating a relaxed but alert mental state, and to lower salivary cortisol under stress.
A randomized trial found that 100 mg Pharma-GABA reduced sleep latency by an average of 5 minutes and increased time spent in deep NREM sleep.
