Also known as: Arginine
L-Arginine is a semi-essential amino acid that serves as a precursor to nitric oxide, a molecule critical for vasodilation and blood flow. It supports cardiovascular health, exercise performance, and immune function.
L-Arginine is a conditionally essential amino acid involved in numerous metabolic pathways. Its most well-known role is as the substrate for nitric oxide synthase (NOS), the enzyme that produces nitric oxide (NO). Nitric oxide relaxes vascular smooth muscle, improving blood flow and lowering blood pressure. L-Arginine also participates in the urea cycle for ammonia detoxification, supports wound healing, and stimulates the release of growth hormone and insulin. While the body can synthesize arginine, demand may exceed production during periods of illness, trauma, or intense exercise, making supplementation beneficial. Clinical research has explored its use in hypertension, erectile dysfunction, and peripheral artery disease with varying degrees of success.
As the direct precursor to nitric oxide, L-Arginine promotes vasodilation, which can lower blood pressure by 5–7 mmHg systolic in hypertensive individuals.
Supplementation may improve exercise tolerance and reduce oxygen cost during moderate-intensity exercise by increasing nitric oxide-mediated blood flow to working muscles.
By increasing nitric oxide availability in penile tissue, L-Arginine has shown modest improvements in erectile function, particularly when combined with Pycnogenol.
Split into 2–3 doses throughout the day
Take on an empty stomach for better absorption. L-Citrulline may be more effective for sustained NO production.
30–60 minutes before exercise
Higher doses may cause gastrointestinal discomfort. Start low and increase gradually.
Flexible dosing and pre-workout use
