L-Tyrosine is a non-essential amino acid synthesized from phenylalanine. It is the rate-limiting precursor in the synthesis of catecholamine neurotransmitters: dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. These neurotransmitters are critical for attention, motivation, executive function, and the stress response. Under conditions of acute stress—such as sleep deprivation, cold exposure, multitasking, or military combat—catecholamine stores become depleted. L-Tyrosine supplementation has been shown to replenish these stores and maintain cognitive performance in such demanding conditions. It is also a precursor to thyroid hormones (thyroxine) and the pigment melanin. N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine (NALT) is a more soluble form, though it may have lower bioavailability for catecholamine synthesis compared to free-form L-Tyrosine.
