Also known as: Lepidium meyenii, Peruvian Ginseng
Maca is a cruciferous root vegetable native to the Peruvian Andes, traditionally used to enhance energy, stamina, and reproductive health. It is rich in glucosinolates, polyphenols, and unique compounds called macamides that may influence hormonal balance and mood.
Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a root vegetable cultivated at altitudes above 4,000 meters in the Peruvian Andes for over 2,000 years. It belongs to the Brassicaceae family and is consumed both as a food staple and a traditional remedy. Maca root contains bioactive compounds including macamides, macaenes, glucosinolates, and alkaloids. Clinical research has focused on its effects on sexual function, fertility, energy levels, and mood regulation. Unlike true adaptogens, maca does not appear to directly modulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis but may influence endocrine function through its unique phytochemical profile. Different color varieties (yellow, red, black) may have distinct biological effects, with black maca showing the strongest effects on spermatogenesis and red maca on prostate health in preclinical studies.
Several randomized controlled trials have found that maca supplementation at 1.5–3 g daily can improve self-reported sexual desire in both men and women, independent of changes in sex hormone levels.
Preliminary evidence suggests that maca may improve exercise performance and reduce fatigue, particularly at high altitudes, though larger trials are needed to confirm these effects.
Clinical studies in postmenopausal women have shown that maca supplementation can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, possibly through its flavonoid content and effects on endorphin signaling.

With breakfast or pre-workout meal
Black maca variety may be most effective for physical performance based on preliminary research.
