Also known as: Medium-Chain Triglycerides, Caprylic/Capric Acid
MCT oil contains medium-chain triglycerides (C6–C12) that are rapidly absorbed and converted to ketones, providing quick energy for the brain and body. It is popular in ketogenic diets and sports nutrition.
Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) are fats with 6–12 carbon chain fatty acids, primarily caprylic acid (C8) and capric acid (C10). Unlike long-chain fatty acids, MCTs bypass normal fat digestion and travel directly to the liver via the portal vein, where they are rapidly converted to ketones. This makes them an efficient energy source that does not require carnitine for mitochondrial entry. MCT oil is typically derived from coconut or palm kernel oil and is widely used in ketogenic diets, sports nutrition, and clinical nutrition for patients with fat malabsorption. Research has explored MCT oil for cognitive support, weight management, and exercise performance.
MCTs are converted to beta-hydroxybutyrate within minutes, providing an alternative brain fuel independent of glucose metabolism. This is being studied for neurodegenerative conditions.
MCTs increase energy expenditure and fat oxidation compared to long-chain fats. Meta-analyses suggest modest reductions in body weight and waist circumference.
Morning or before exercise; start with 5 ml and increase gradually
Start low to avoid gastrointestinal distress. C8 (caprylic acid) produces ketones most efficiently.
Maximum ketone production
Travel convenience and gentler digestion
