Also known as: Methylsulfonylmethane, Dimethyl sulfone, DMSO2
MSM is an organosulfur compound found naturally in plants and animals that is widely used for joint health and inflammation. Clinical trials suggest it may reduce osteoarthritis pain and improve physical function, though the evidence base remains moderate.
Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a naturally occurring organosulfur compound found in fruits, vegetables, grains, and human body fluids. It provides biologically active sulfur, which is essential for the synthesis of connective tissue components including collagen, glucosamine, and chondroitin. MSM has demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting NF-κB signaling and reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6 and TNF-α. Several randomized controlled trials in osteoarthritis patients have shown that MSM supplementation at doses of 1.5–6 g per day can reduce pain and improve physical function, often with comparable effects to NSAIDs but with fewer gastrointestinal side effects. MSM is also being studied for exercise recovery, seasonal allergies, and skin health. It has an excellent safety profile, with no serious adverse effects reported in clinical studies at doses up to 6 g per day for up to 6 months.
Randomized controlled trials show MSM at 3–6 g per day significantly reduces pain and stiffness in knee osteoarthritis, with improvements in WOMAC scores comparable to some NSAIDs.
Preliminary studies indicate MSM supplementation may reduce markers of muscle damage and oxidative stress following intense exercise, potentially supporting faster recovery.
A small RCT showed that 2.6 g/day MSM for 30 days reduced upper and lower respiratory symptoms and increased energy in patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis.
