Also known as: Urtica dioica, Stinging Nettle Root
Nettle root (Urtica dioica) is traditionally used to support urinary tract health and prostate function. Clinical research suggests it may help manage symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and modulate inflammatory pathways.
Nettle root (Urtica dioica) contains lignans, polysaccharides, and sterols that interact with sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and inhibit aromatase and 5α-reductase enzymes. These mechanisms underlie its primary use in managing benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), where clinical trials have demonstrated improvements in urinary flow rate, residual urine volume, and International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS). Nettle root also exhibits anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways, and it has been shown to reduce inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6 and TNF-α. Additionally, nettle root may support joint health through its anti-inflammatory properties. It is generally well tolerated and available as capsules, tinctures, and dried root for tea preparations.
Multiple randomized controlled trials have shown nettle root extract significantly improves urinary symptoms in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia, including increased urinary flow rate and reduced residual urine volume.
Nettle root inhibits NF-κB activation and suppresses pro-inflammatory cytokines including TNF-α and IL-1β, which may benefit joint health and systemic inflammation.
Lignans in nettle root bind to sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), potentially influencing free testosterone levels and inhibiting aromatase and 5α-reductase enzyme activity.
