Also known as: Morinda citrifolia, Indian Mulberry, Noni Fruit
Noni (Morinda citrifolia) is a tropical fruit used in Polynesian traditional medicine for immune support and general vitality. It contains iridoids, flavonoids, and polysaccharides with antioxidant and immunomodulatory properties, though high-quality clinical evidence remains limited.
Noni (Morinda citrifolia) is a tropical fruit-bearing tree native to Southeast Asia and Polynesia, where it has been used for over 2,000 years in traditional healing practices. The fruit contains a diverse array of bioactive compounds including iridoid glycosides (particularly deacetylasperulosidic acid), scopoletin, anthraquinones, flavonoids, and polysaccharides. In vitro and animal studies demonstrate antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and immunomodulatory effects. Human studies, while limited, suggest noni juice may reduce markers of oxidative stress (lipid peroxidation), improve immune cell activity, and increase physical endurance. Noni has been shown to activate macrophages and enhance natural killer cell activity in preclinical models. The European Food Safety Authority has approved noni fruit juice and puree as a novel food. However, large-scale randomized clinical trials are lacking, and the evidence base is primarily preclinical. Noni juice has a distinctive strong odor and taste. Rare cases of hepatotoxicity have been reported, though causality is debated and may relate to contaminated or adulterated products.
Human studies show noni juice significantly reduces lipid peroxidation markers (TBARS and MDA) and increases plasma antioxidant capacity in healthy smokers and exercisers, suggesting protection against oxidative stress.
Preclinical studies show noni polysaccharides activate macrophages, enhance natural killer cell activity, and modulate cytokine production. Limited human data suggest improved immune markers.
