Also known as: Passiflora incarnata, Maypop, Purple passionflower
Passionflower is a calming herb that modulates GABA-A receptors to reduce anxiety and improve sleep quality. Clinical trials support its efficacy as a natural anxiolytic comparable to low-dose benzodiazepines.
Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) is a perennial climbing vine native to the southeastern United States, traditionally used for anxiety, insomnia, and nervous restlessness. Its bioactive compounds include chrysin, vitexin, isovitexin, and other C-glycosyl flavonoids that act as positive allosteric modulators of GABA-A receptors, enhancing inhibitory neurotransmission without the sedation and dependence risks of benzodiazepines. A landmark randomized controlled trial demonstrated that passionflower extract was as effective as oxazepam for generalized anxiety disorder, with significantly fewer side effects including less impairment of job performance. Additional studies show improvements in subjective sleep quality, increased total sleep time, and reduced sleep onset latency. The herb also exhibits mild antispasmodic and analgesic properties. Passionflower is available as dried herb for tea, standardized capsules, and liquid extracts.
A double-blind RCT showed passionflower extract was as effective as oxazepam 30 mg/day for generalized anxiety disorder over 4 weeks, with significantly less impairment of job performance. The anxiolytic effect is mediated through GABA-A receptor modulation.
Clinical studies demonstrate that passionflower tea and extracts improve subjective sleep quality, increase total sleep time, and reduce sleep onset latency compared to placebo, with effects comparable to mild sedatives.
