Also known as: Pycnogenol, Pinus pinaster
Maritime pine bark extract, commonly sold as Pycnogenol, is a potent source of procyanidins with strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is clinically studied for cardiovascular support, improved microcirculation, and skin health.
Maritime pine bark extract is derived from the bark of Pinus pinaster, a tree native to the western Mediterranean. The standardized extract Pycnogenol contains a concentrated blend of procyanidins, bioflavonoids, and phenolic acids that act as powerful free radical scavengers. It enhances endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) activity, improving vasodilation and microcirculation. Clinical trials have demonstrated benefits for blood pressure regulation, reduction of leg edema during long flights, and improvement of symptoms in chronic venous insufficiency. Pycnogenol also inhibits NF-κB and COX-2, providing anti-inflammatory effects comparable to aspirin at higher doses. Studies show benefits for skin elasticity and photoprotection by stimulating collagen and hyaluronic acid synthesis. It is well tolerated and available as standardized capsules and tablets.
Pycnogenol enhances nitric oxide production and improves endothelial function. Clinical trials show significant reductions in blood pressure and improvements in microcirculation in patients with chronic venous insufficiency.
The procyanidins in pine bark scavenge superoxide and hydroxyl radicals and inhibit NF-κB-mediated inflammatory signaling. Studies demonstrate reductions in C-reactive protein and joint stiffness in osteoarthritis patients.
Pycnogenol stimulates collagen and hyaluronic acid synthesis, improving skin elasticity and hydration. It also provides UV protection by reducing melanin synthesis and oxidative stress in skin cells.
Divided into two doses with meals
Use standardized Pycnogenol extract (65–75% procyanidins). Benefits typically emerge after 4–8 weeks of consistent use.
Once daily with a meal
Lower doses have shown skin benefits in clinical trials over 12 weeks.
Consistent procyanidin content and clinical-grade quality
Budget-friendly alternative
