Pomegranate is rich in punicalagins and ellagic acid, potent polyphenols with strong antioxidant and cardioprotective effects. Clinical evidence supports its use for blood pressure reduction, arterial health, and exercise recovery.
Pomegranate (Punica granatum) fruit and extract contain uniquely high concentrations of punicalagins, ellagic acid, and anthocyanins, giving it one of the highest antioxidant capacities measured (ORAC) among fruits. Punicalagins are hydrolyzed to ellagic acid in the gut and further metabolized by colonic microbiota to urolithins, which have superior bioavailability and anti-inflammatory properties. Clinical trials demonstrate that pomegranate juice consumption reduces systolic blood pressure, decreases carotid intima-media thickness (a marker of atherosclerosis), and lowers oxidized LDL. The extract inhibits ACE activity and enhances endothelial nitric oxide production. Additional research supports anti-cancer properties through induction of apoptosis in prostate and breast cancer cell lines, though clinical evidence remains preliminary.
