Also known as: Prunus africana, African Plum Tree, African Cherry
Pygeum bark extract (Prunus africana) is widely used in Europe for managing symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It contains phytosterols and pentacyclic triterpenes that support urinary tract function and reduce prostatic inflammation.
Pygeum (Prunus africana) bark extract has been used in European phytotherapy for decades as a first-line botanical treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The extract contains beta-sitosterol and other phytosterols, pentacyclic triterpenes (ursolic and oleanolic acids), and ferulic acid esters (n-docosanol). These compounds collectively inhibit 5α-reductase activity, reduce prostatic fibroblast growth factor levels, and exhibit anti-inflammatory effects by suppressing prostaglandin and leukotriene synthesis. A Cochrane review of 18 randomized trials found pygeum significantly improved urological symptoms and urinary flow compared to placebo. Pygeum also reduces prolactin-induced prostatic growth and may improve secretory function of the prostate. It is generally well tolerated, with gastrointestinal complaints being the most common adverse effect. Standardized bark extracts (typically to 14% triterpenes) are the most commonly studied form.
A Cochrane systematic review of 18 trials with 1,562 men found pygeum significantly improved overall urological symptoms (by 23%) and peak urinary flow rate compared to placebo.
Pygeum inhibits prostaglandin biosynthesis, reduces fibroblast growth factor activity, and decreases prolactin-mediated prostatic cell proliferation in preclinical and clinical studies.
50–100 mg twice daily with meals
Use extract standardized to 14% triterpenes and 0.5% n-docosanol. Clinical effects may take 6–8 weeks to manifest.
Prostate health with consistent active compound content
Enhanced absorption of fat-soluble phytosterols
