Also known as: Trifolium pratense, Isoflavone Clover
Red clover is a leguminous plant rich in isoflavones, particularly biochanin A and formononetin, which exert mild estrogenic effects. It is widely used to alleviate menopausal symptoms and support cardiovascular health.
Red clover (Trifolium pratense) contains high concentrations of isoflavones, a class of phytoestrogens that bind to estrogen receptors and exert tissue-selective effects. The primary isoflavones—biochanin A, formononetin, genistein, and daidzein—have been studied extensively for their role in alleviating vasomotor symptoms such as hot flashes during menopause. Meta-analyses suggest modest but significant reductions in hot flash frequency compared to placebo. Additionally, red clover isoflavones have demonstrated favorable effects on arterial compliance and lipid profiles, contributing to cardiovascular protection. Some evidence also supports a role in maintaining bone mineral density in postmenopausal women. Red clover is generally well tolerated and available as standardized extracts, capsules, teas, and tinctures.
Meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials show that red clover isoflavones significantly reduce the frequency and severity of hot flashes in menopausal women compared to placebo.
Red clover isoflavones improve arterial compliance and may favorably influence lipid profiles, including modest reductions in triglycerides and increases in HDL cholesterol.
Some clinical trials suggest that red clover isoflavones slow bone mineral density loss in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women, potentially through estrogen receptor-mediated osteoblast stimulation.
Once or twice daily with meals
Standardized extracts providing 40 mg isoflavones per dose are most commonly studied. Allow 4–12 weeks for full effects.
Once daily with a meal
Higher doses have been used in cardiovascular studies. Consult a healthcare provider before use.
