Also known as: Rosa canina, Dog Rose Fruit
Rose hip is the fruit of Rosa canina, rich in vitamin C, polyphenols, and galactolipids. It is clinically studied for its anti-inflammatory effects in osteoarthritis and its antioxidant properties supporting immune and skin health.
Rose hip (Rosa canina) is a nutrient-dense pseudo-fruit containing high levels of vitamin C (up to 1700 mg per 100 g in some varieties), carotenoids, flavonoids, and a unique galactolipid compound known as GOPO (galactolipid derived from rose hip). Clinical research has focused particularly on its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties in osteoarthritis, where meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials show significant reductions in pain scores and improvements in joint function. The anti-inflammatory mechanism involves inhibition of COX-1, COX-2, and the chemotaxis of peripheral blood neutrophils and monocytes. Rose hip also provides potent antioxidant protection, supports collagen synthesis for skin health, and contributes to immune function through its high vitamin C content. It is available as powder, capsules, teas, and extracts.
Meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials demonstrate that rose hip powder significantly reduces pain and improves joint mobility in osteoarthritis patients compared to placebo.
Rose hip's exceptionally high vitamin C content, combined with polyphenols and carotenoids, provides broad-spectrum antioxidant protection and supports immune cell function.
