Also known as: Brazilian Ginseng, Pfaffia paniculata, Para Toda
Suma root is a large ground vine native to the tropical rainforests of South America, traditionally used as a tonic to boost energy, vitality, and immune function. It contains ecdysteroids, saponins, and germanium, which contribute to its adaptogenic properties.
Suma root (Pfaffia paniculata) is a sprawling vine from the tropical and subtropical regions of Central and South America, particularly Brazil, where it is known as 'para toda' (for everything) due to its versatile traditional use. The root contains beta-ecdysterone, pfaffic acid, pfaffosides (triterpenoid saponins), and significant amounts of the trace mineral germanium. Beta-ecdysterone, a plant-derived ecdysteroid, has been studied for its potential anabolic effects on muscle protein synthesis without androgenic hormonal activity. In traditional Brazilian medicine, suma root has been used as an adaptogen, aphrodisiac, and immune stimulant. While preclinical data are promising, human clinical trials remain limited, and most evidence is derived from traditional use and animal studies. Suma root is generally considered safe but should not be confused with true ginseng species, despite the common name 'Brazilian ginseng.'
Beta-ecdysterone from suma root has shown anabolic effects in cell and animal studies by activating estrogen receptor-beta-mediated pathways to stimulate muscle protein synthesis without androgenic side effects.
Preclinical research indicates that suma root polysaccharides and saponins stimulate macrophage activity and modulate cytokine production, supporting its traditional use as an immune-enhancing agent.
