Zeaxanthin is a carotenoid pigment concentrated in the center of the macula, where it provides critical antioxidant protection and blue-light filtering. It is typically supplemented alongside lutein for optimal eye health.
Zeaxanthin is a xanthophyll carotenoid that, together with lutein and meso-zeaxanthin, constitutes the macular pigment of the human retina. While lutein predominates in the peripheral macula, zeaxanthin is preferentially concentrated in the fovea centralis, the region of highest visual acuity. This strategic distribution provides the foveal photoreceptors with concentrated antioxidant protection against photo-oxidative damage. The AREDS2 study established the clinical value of combined lutein and zeaxanthin supplementation in reducing AMD progression. Research also indicates that higher zeaxanthin status is associated with improved visual performance under glare conditions and enhanced contrast sensitivity. Like lutein, zeaxanthin cannot be synthesized endogenously and must be obtained through diet or supplementation.
As part of the AREDS2 formulation, zeaxanthin combined with lutein significantly reduced the risk of progression to advanced AMD, particularly in individuals with low baseline carotenoid intake.
Clinical studies show that increasing macular pigment density through zeaxanthin supplementation improves glare recovery time, contrast sensitivity, and visual processing speed.

The AREDS2 formula uses 2 mg zeaxanthin with 10 mg lutein. Higher doses up to 4 mg have been used safely in studies.
